About the Foundation:
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading national volunteer-based organization in Canada dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer. Established in 1986 by a dedicated group of volunteers, the Foundation works collaboratively to fund, support and advocate for:
Relevant and innovated research
Meaningful education and awareness programs
Early diagnosis and effective treatment, and
A positive quality of life for those living with breast cancer
Our fundraising has enabled the Foundation to allocate millions of dollars in grants for breast cancer projects and services since our inception.
Making a Difference:
Our investments are made with a strategic focus on the impact on the lives of those most affected by breast cancer, including improving women's quality of life and increasing knowledge about breast cancer risk reduction and treatment. The Foundation supports high-quality research in all areas including education and prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and other after-care supports. We direct additional dollars to the cause through work in the areas of health promotion, community engagement, volunteer development, and advocacy. In support of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada, Govan Brown employees and friends Dressed for the Cause on October 19, 2011. The dimly lit room, tea light candles burning on each table and a smorgasbord of culinary delights and hors d'oeuvres made a lovely spread in the ever trendy Bier Markt on King Street.
Clients, friends and employees all made the trek in the cold, hard rain to support this great cause. Everyone was adorned in white t-shirts with pink bras emblazoned on their chests to raise awareness for the event. All monies raised were donated to the cause. Govan Brown has been an avid sponsor and supporter of the fight against breast cancer through various initiatives.
Govan Brown was pleased to sponsor this year's Bennett Beach Bash to help battle women's cancers and are proud to announce that with our assistance, they raised $30,000! A record turn-out of 460 people, including Govan Brown employees, turned up for the 'totally radical' event! This year's donations will be going to the Sunnybrook Hospital Odette Centre for Cancer. The annual event was hosted by Bennett Design Associates and located in Toronto's East end, Balmy Beach Club.
Govan Brown's own Government Brown hit the stage as entertainment wowing the crowd with their medly of classic hits.
On Friday, April 15th, Govan Brown participated in the "20-minute Toronto Make-Over 2011" event hosted by the City of Toronto. This was an effort to clean up Toronto by forming groups from businesses and neighborhoods around the city and then "clean it up" for 20 minutes.
Susan Featherstone is amazed by the amount raised through the March 25 charity casino event co-hosted by BLJC and Govan Brown to benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The fundraising goal of $25,000 was exceeded by $22,000 for a final total of $47,000. “We knew the event would be a success. However, I never dreamt we could do so well with our very first event,” says Featherstone, who co-organized the charity casino with BLJC staff member Mary Lou Horton. Featherstone notes, thanks is in order for all those who contributed to the evening’s success.
Beyond the extraordinary fundraising success, the inaugural event was a triumph in terms of the number of people engaged and the fun had by all. About 300 guests, including clients, suppliers, BLJC staff and their families and friends attended the event at the Hilton Suites Hotel in Markham, where an elegantly festive ambience was created with soft lighting, balloon bouquets and pink up-lights. Guests had an opportunity to play casino games with casino dollars rather than real money, sample an array of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and enjoy live music from the band Midlife Crisis. More than $25,000 worth of merchandise, much of it donated by BLJC and Govan Brown suppliers, was sold in a silent auction for cash and a live auction with casino chips. Featherstone notes the most exhilarating part of the evening was the excitement created by the live auction.
With a wide range of items available, from a $50 barbecue tool to a $1,000 travel voucher, the bidding became very heated. The most coveted item was an iPhone, which sold for 205,000 casino dollars. Featherstone notes many guests purchased additional chips to spend in the live auction. “Everyone had a great time,” she says. BLJC president Gord Hicks and Govan Brown co-owner Jon Taylor were hosts for the evening. Staff that assisted at the casino included the following: Joe Bile, Eddie Camilleri, Melanie Thornber, Eva John, Paulette Zahoor, Angela West, Rebecca Brain, Tara Treml, Trish Watson, Lathipa Kathiravel, Arpita Patel, Dar Lei, Rocco Longhi and Yau Sun Ma. Featherstone notes special thanks goes to Ginny Lovelace of Govan Brown for her assistance in securing sponsorships and donations.
Corporate sponsorships were secured from the following BLJC and Govan Brown suppliers: Adelt Mechanical Works, Brookfield Properties, Camden Glass, Deloitte & Touche LLP, First Capital Realty, Four Seasons Drywall systems & Acoustics Ltd., Haworth, HOK Canada, Johnson Controls, Pinchin Environmental Ltd., Refined Corporate Finishes Ltd., TELUS Business Solutions and Trillium Architectural Products Ltd. Representatives from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation attended as well. They included CEO Sandra Palmero, director of development Tracy Figg, senior development officer Andrea Lucas, development co-ordinator Catherine Nguyen and Leaders for the Cure co-chair Christina Kramer. Featherstone says there are definitely plans for a second casino charity in 2011.
BLJC supports the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in other ways as well. Hicks is the real estate cabinet chair for the foundation’s Leaders for the Cure program for 2009-2010. In addition, BLJC has launched a program called Casual for Cancer Fridays which sees staff make a two-dollar donation to dress casually for the day. Over the past six months $1,000 has been raised through that initiative. “Our vision is to help the foundation create a future without breast cancer,” says Featherstone. “One in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in our lifetime, and it is our hope that with our small contribution we can change that.”
Govan Brown raised $69,814.76 through fundraising initiatives and charity challenges and donated the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Society of Ontario. It was a spectacular month-long event that had Govan Brown employees working hand-in-hand from coast-to-coast. All Govan Brown employees were placed in teams. Each team had to organize various fundraising ideas to raise monies which included selling bracelets at Union Station, on-site bake sales, swear jars, letter bombs, and a charity concert by none other than our own Govan Brown band, Government Brown. Teams were also required to participate in charity challenges which included a Relay Race, Scavenger Hunt, Laser Tag and a Costume Contest.
The winning team GOT PINK raised a total of $11,742.00
2nd place: Rack Pack $10,856.67
3rd place: Push-Up Pals $10,808.04
4th place: Construction For The Cure $10,482.00
5th place: Think Pink! $8589.05
Govan Brown is already planning another charity challenge for 2012 so stay tuned for more information!
