 QUEEN VICTORIA PUBLIC SCHOOL

At Govan Brown we don’t just build the workplace – we build communities.  This is why our head office in Toronto has partnered with nearby Queen Victoria Public School. It is a large inner-city school founded in Parkdale in 1887.  The nearly 800 students in attendance come from various language groups and many have arrived recently in Canada.  Our close partnership with QVPS has been a fulfilling venture for all of our employees.  We relish the opportunity to help the community and improve the lives of others and look forward to participating in more community-oriented programs.
BREAKFAST WITH GOVANBROWN  Over the last 5 years, our employees have volunteered for a number of initiatives including the Reading Readiness Program, which allowed our staff to volunteer their lunch hour to read with some students from QVPS for whom English was a second language.  We recently had the opportunity to replace that program with a new breakfast initiative, Breakfast with Govan Brown or Bw/GB.  Although Govan Brown currently sponsors  QVPS' Morning Meal Snack Program, this new endeavour engages a dozen or so staff

to cook and serve breakfast for QVPS students.  This new inititiative will take place on the last Friday of every month for the duration of the school year. The menu includes a wide variety of breakfast foods including scrambled eggs, waffles, hash browns, cereal, yogurt, fruit and an assortment of beverages. It is our hope that this initiative will improve the academic performance of many students who may otherwise go to school on empty stomachs.
MORNING MEAL SNACK PROGRAM  To promote healthy education, Govan Brown is sponsoring the school’s morning meal and lunch program. This ensures every child has a proper breakfast and lunch each day. We believe that good nutrition fuels great learning and this will ultimately build the best future for these children.
READING READINESS PROGRAM  Govan Brown employees also particiapte in a Reading Readiness Program. The goal is to read with students in a one-on-one format, with a focus on students for whom English is a second language. 75% of the children who attend Queen Victoria Public School have immigrated to Canada creating huge language barriers for these students to overcome.

This extra attention gives students an audience to read to and with which greatly helps students improve their reading skills and keep them up to par.
SPOON DRIVE  To raise environmental awareness, Govan Brown recently donated 400 spoons to their Spoon Drive.  With almost 800 students using spoons 5 days a week, that's more than 4,000 plastic spoons used and disposed of on a weekly basis.  Our Spoon Drive aims to replace these plastic spoons with metal spoons. This will not only reduce real waste, but also provide a learning lesson, encouraging students to think about their own impact on the environment.

BACKPACK PROGRAM  The Backpack Program provides donations of backpacks and school supplies to newcomer students on an as needed basis.
COAT & BOOT DRIVE  Govan Brown employees collect gently used winter garments and donate them to the QVPS to help newcoming students and their families dress appropriately for the winter months.
